Hypersexuality has long been defined as the excessive and uncontrollable desire to have sex, sexual fantasies and urges. For women nymphomania term has been used, for men satyriasis term has been used for defining the same phenomenon. DSM V will be defining a Hypersexual Disorder in 2013 supported by APA (American Psychiatric Association) There is a chaos in terminology about excessive sexual desire and activity. Hypersexual is also used for women who have expanded sexual response of the female. The normals of the female sexual response has not been defined properly until now. The normals for female sexuality are changing by time. For instance multiple orgasms were nearly impossible for many women 100 years ago; however according to Cosmo Report (1983) nearly 65 % of American women experienced multiple orgasms. There are other reports claiming that female sexual response can be extended or expanded and the number and/or the intensity of orgasms can be increased. Once the intensity of sexual satisfaction is increased the need and urge to get indulged into sexual activity will increase as well, as reported by many women in the literature. It is a fact that we, males, should admit that women of 21. century will not easily be satisfied once they unfold their inner potentials, a phenomenon which will become a serious threat to males and to the cultural structure of Western society today (e.g. family structure). The sexual potentials of males will increase in 21. century, as well! Expanded sexual response has not been thoroughly investigated by the scientists and medical experts until now. There are a few books or reports about the expanded sexual response of females. It is known that there are women who can experience orgasms for a long time, exceeding all known and accepted patterns. For instance, their capacity to have orgasms may be enhanced as much as, going for more than hour to have continuous orgasmic contractions, multiple orgasms, blended orgasms, eventually status orgasmus. Will these women be accepted as insatiable and nymphomaniac or are we going to accept them as women who have transcended their sexuality and expanded their sexual response? Most of the enhanced sexual response of these women is not due to a bipolar disorder, mental illness, obsessive compulsive disorder or a metabolic disorder (or brain traua, temporal lobe epilepsy, brain pathology etc) !
Here, the notions of ‘uncontrollable urge’, ‘behavior being harmful to daily life and the self’ take great importance. The pathology may start when the woman cannot control herself to continue sexual encounters and it is harmful to the psychology of the self. DSM V is taking these issues into account. However, the validity of The Hypersexual Disorder Screening Inventory (HDSI) scoring for the diagnosis of Hypersexual Disorder is questionable. We will publish articles about the criticisms of HDSI on this web page. DSM V is not also taking into account what are the normals for female sexuality. Actually hypersexuality and enhanced sexual response in American and European societies are very widespread, many women who do not have other mental disorders but only enhanced sexual response will easily be diagnosed as hypersexual disorder. Let’s take one question from HDSI for example: A.2 During the past 2 weeks (14 days), how many times per week did you have an orgasm (climax) while engaging in all of your problematic sexual behavior ? 0. none 1. up to 1 time per week 2. 2-4 times per week 3. 5-8 times per week 4. 9 or more times per week your rating__________ The scores are added up to give a score of problematic sexuality. If a woman does not have orgasms during the last 14 days then her score will look up to be closer to a more normal value. Hyposexuality will make her close to normal in this case. This A.2 is also not valid for a woman who has expanded sexual response, and multi orgasmic. Multi orgasmic women may have more than 9 orgasms during only one love making session. To whom is APA asking this question? Next question is less scientific and questionable than the former one: A.3. During the past 2 weeks (14 days), on average, how much time per day was consumed by all of your problematic sexual fantasies, sexual urges or sexual behavior? 0. no time 1. up to 15 minutes in the average day 2. between 16 minutes and 1 hour in the average day 3. between 1 to 3 hours in the average day 4. more than 3 hours in the average day your rating____________ A woman who has an expanded sexual response may spend approximately 3 hours in the average day, which is very normal for her, however this will make her score higher, making her a hypersexual woman with a problematic sex life. So according to APA, a woman with a couple of orgasms in 14 days is becoming close to have a 'normal sex life'! Is this a normal, scientific analysis of female sexuality? If the woman experiences status orgasmus (namely 10-25 orgasms in a couple of hours) then she will be accepted as mentally ill! Then nearly 10-15 % of American women, and 15-20 % of European women will be accepted as sexually problematic, hypersexual disorder or eventually even perverted. On this page we will publish a full criticisms about APA’s scoring on 'being sexually problematic'. The societies’ views about Hypersexuality and enhanced sexual response of human female will change soon. People will realize the potentials and capacities of females. To give an example we cite an internet article about how to recognize a hypersexual woman, the classical view of hypersexual woman, created by males who are afraid of the sexual potentials of women. THE ARTICLE TAKEN FROM INTERNET, EXPLAINING THE CLASSICAL VIEW OF HYPERSEXUALITY: http://www.intimatemedicine.com/sex-in-society/how-to-recognize-hypersexual-women/ How to Recognize Hypersexual Women?
Learn more about nymphomania or hypersexuality and make sure that you recognise the symptoms of addiction. What are the essential traits of a hypersexual woman? Nymphomania (or hypersexuality) is defined as an excessive desire for sexual encounters. The term is used for women only. It is derived from a Greek expression that literally means “female madness”. This is a condition where a woman constantly feels the urge for sexual satisfaction. In other words, a hypersexual woman - a nymphomaniac - is a woman who is mad about sex to the point of being addicted to it. The equivalent term used for men is satyriasis. How do you recognise a hypersexual woman? Nymphomaniacs are said to belong to a special species. But how do you distinguish a hypersexual woman from a woman who enjoys sex without being addicted to it? That's fairly easy. Women who love sex wake up and go to sleep with sex on their mind. A nymphomaniac, however, wakes up and goes to sleep with sex itself. As a rule, she is not capable of forming long-lasting and deep relationships unless her partner gratifies all her desires which are often anything but simple. The chief aim in her life is sexual pleasure, which can (as you can imagine) have an adverse effect on all other areas of her life. For instance, significantly less attention is devoted to experiencing emotions, intercourse becomes impersonal, and sexual life is boring and no longer provides any real satisfaction despite frequent orgasms . Such a woman is hypersexual and impulsive, and the activity which gives her most pleasure is sex or masturbation . Are porn stars hypersexual women? Absolutely not. Porn industry gives viewers an idea of women who are sexually insatiable and unable to resist any sort of hints about sex. A lot of men probably imagine horny Jenna Jameson when they hear the word “nymphomaniac”, but that is not the case at all. There should be a distinction made between an actress and a real nymphomaniac. Women in films only act to be nymphomaniacs for the camera, while real life hypersexual women live with nymphomania from day to day. Maybe there are real nymphomaniacs in porn industry as well, but the lure of this business is primarily still money and the hope to become famous. In porn films, women rarely show real pleasure on their faces. Was nymphomania invented by men? Some people think that the term “nymphomania” was invented by men, for one reason only – to protect their egos. Men with strong sexual desire are considered passionate and are reputed to be great lovers, while a woman who is more "sexual" than an average man is considered a threat and is therefore easily labelled a nymphomaniac or a promiscuous person. Especially those men who have problems with impotence hide their feelings of shame and fear by employing the word “nymphomaniac” with which they label their partners who show an overwhelming desire for sex. When hypersexuality is not fun any more The Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary defines a nymphomaniac as “a woman who has sex or wants to have sex very often”, which means that such a woman has abnormally excessive sexual desire. Nymphomania has its negative aspects, as all other addictions. When it leads to uncontrollable sexual relations with strangers, promiscuity and unprotected sexual intercourse, the consequences may be fatal. As for psychological consequences, they can appear in the form of emotional apathy or the inability to express one's emotions because they are suppressed by irrational sexual lust. There is a danger that sexual relations become boring despite frequent orgasms and the person starts wanting more and more. A hypersexual woman may also suffer from manic mood swings, an overpowering need for a man’s affection and great emotional tension. Who shows an excessive desire for sex? The exact meaning of an excessive desire for sex can be only explained in layman’s terms. To recognise an excessive sexual desire, you first have to know what a normal sexual desire looks like. As you all know, couples face a decline in sex life after the initial phase of wild and constantly sparkling sex. Could the beginning phase of a relationship be described as a nymphomaniac period and all other periods as normal? What about those couples who still have sexual intercourse twice a day after being in a relationship for years? Are these people hypersexual? If a woman had sexual encounters with ten different men a day seeking her own satisfaction, she would be labelled a nymphomaniac. What about prostitutes who have sexual encounters with ten different clients every day? I guess we might consider those of them who love their job as hypersexual. In conclusion, let's quote Samantha Jones from the Sex and the City series: “I never leave underwear at a guy’s place because I never see it again… I just never go back... That’s why I stopped wearing underwear on dates |
